Gambling Bill Passes in West Virginia Senate

On Monday, the West Virginia State Senate passed legislation allowing casino table games at the state's racetracks. The bill will next be passed on to the senate, where its lead sponsor, Sen. Andy McKenzie, R-Ohio, expects it to fare well.
In addition, the senate rejected a number of Republican-backed amendments, including one calling for a state referendum on the table gambling issue. One Republican bill that did pass in the senate decreed that a portion of gambling profits would go towards easing regional jail expenses.
The senate also passed a Democrat-backed amendment, which would raise the yearly license fee for running table games. The money gained from the increased license fee is set to be divided among West Virginia’s Regional Economic Development Authorities.
