High School Teacher and Student Get Chatty in Casino, End Up in the Bedroom

In late summer, 2005, a 17-year-old girl and a 30-year-old high school marketing teacher coincidentally met at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood. One thing led to another, and the two, a teacher and student at the very same school, were allegedly swept into a sexual relationship that lasted six months. When Cypress Bay High School officials learned about the case, the girl refused to testify against Alex Anninos, her teacher/lover, claiming that she loved the man.
School officials discovered the relationship after Anninos' roommate walked in on the couple, catching them in a compromising situation. Anninos reportedly told his roommate that the girl was already 18 years old. The roommate informed his father, a security specialist at the school, about the case. On Saturday, Anninos confessed to the security specialist that the girl was a minor and a current student. The authorities initiated a full investigation earlier this week. The casino love affair has cost Anninos his teaching job.
Some child experts and advocates were reported as saying that, in many cases, sexual relationships between minors and adults have proved disastrous. Although in the state of Florida it is a second-degree felony for an adult aged over 24 to have sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old, since the girl refused to cooperate with the investigators, the teacher will probably not face criminal charges. It seems that what started as an innocent encounter in a casino, ended as an embarrassing sex scandal.
