  Blackjack: Online Casino General Information

At first glance, blackjack may appear to be a bit simplistic. So the dealer deals out two cards; if they equal 21, you win, if not, a few more options are available and that's all there is to it, right? And this is a game that's been around for several hundred years!

Blackjack really is more complex than it seems, because what may appear at first sight to be the most common-sense strategy is in fact one that will almost guarantee a player's loss. Land based casinos used to roll in a lot of cash from players before a mainstream strategy was formulated, so that today, blackjack fans have the necessary tools to lower the house edge to a much more comfortable percentage.

The game has a very distinct appeal to people who enjoy straightforward games without too many rules or betting options surrounding play. Playing blackjack online provides players with an excellent opportunity to familiarize themselves with the game, without any of the pressures of actually being at a blackjack table. Particularly when it comes to strategy, a player can test any strategy he chooses, at his own pace, without worrying about making embarrassing mistakes next to more experienced players. There are less distractions and it is definitely much easier to focus on honing certain game skills.

How to Play Blackjack

The main objective of blackjack is to beat the dealer in whichever way possible. This can be done in several ways: either players have a higher hand than the dealer, the dealer busts, or players reach the ideal hand value of "21".

When beginning the game, the dealer deals out cards so that each player has two cards face up and the dealer has two cards with one face down. Depending on the cards, players are given additional betting and playing options as follows:

Hit
Players may request an additional card in order to increase their hand value. They may continue to do so until a player reaches 21, or goes over 21, which is known as 'busting'. If a player busts, the hand is automatically lost.

Stand
If a player decides that they are satisfied with their hand, they may opt to 'stand', which means that they may no longer make any more changes to their hand and are ready to face the dealer.

Split
If a player's initial first two cards are the same, they may be split into two separate hands with the placement of another bet equal in value to the original. The same principles of black jack apply to the additional hand, with the exception of splitting two aces. On such a split, a player may only receive one more card for each ace.

Double
A player may choose the double option after being dealt two cards if he thinks that by adding one additional card, he will beat the dealer. Choosing this option doubles a player's original bet.

Insurance
If the dealer's up card is showing an Ace, a player has the option of buying 'insurance', which is placing a bet half of the initial amount wagered on the dealer having a blackjack. If the dealer does indeed show a black jack, a player is paid back 2 to 1 on his insurance bet.

Strategy

Blackjack strategies operate on the concept of odds. Among the more famous beginner strategies is the 'basic strategy', which provides charts explaining when to hit and when to stand according to the hand held by the player and the dealer. These strategies are the result of careful mathematical calculations and many experts claim that in the long run, they will result in more wins than losses. In general, when playing blackjack it is important to keep in mind that strategies can not be effectively formulated based on just a player's cards. Strategy must be directly influence by a player's hand, in addition to what card the dealer is showing.

Player Options and Security

One of the perks of playing online blackjack is the multi-hand option, which allows players to play several hands at once. There is also the possibility of playing multi-player black jack or playing with a private group. Security is ensured through the use of a random number generator on the general basis of a six card deck.
