Online Casino Payment Service Adopts Identification Aid to Stop Fraud and Underage Gambling

UK payment service provider DataCash announced today that it signed an agreement with communications solutions provider BT to license the latter's URU™ identification service. URU will help online casinos using DataCash payment services to thwart underage gambling attempts and fraud.

Users paying via the URU-enabled DataCash will have to answer a set of identification questions relating to personal records, the answers to which will be compared against national reference databases. Without using identification technology such as URU, online casinos are left with users' debit cards as the sole source of identity information. Some debit cards are issued to children as young as eleven years of age, making them an inadequate means of identifying gamblers.

Taking preventative measures against fraud and underage gambling will likely become a main priority for online casinos serving the UK. The new Money Laundering Regulations, which currently apply to land-based casinos, could soon apply to online casinos as well. Also, should the much-debated Gambling Bill be passed, a new commission will receive jurisdiction to randomly check on online casino sites, in order to determine whether or not they serve underage gamblers.
